I saw V for Vendetta yesterday and am happy to say that the Wachowski brothers are back to form. V is not a disappointment like The Matrix 2 and 3 and is on par with the original Matrix. Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving and Stephen Rea are all on point as the film makes a political point. The original graphic novel criticized Margaret Thatcher's England, but the Wachowski film aims its sights on the heavy-handed politics of George Bush, his Iraq War and policies like The Patriot Act. While echoing books like 1984, The Trial and We, the film takes a fresh look at goverment power gone too far. It also tackles more delicate themes like the persecution of homosexuals and uses Holocaust imagery (mass graves, emaciated prisoners and swastika-like emblems) to strengthen its arguments.
That said, even with its heavy subject matter, V for Vendetta is an entertaining action movie. It makes a point and kicks ass too.
To promote the movie, Natalie Portman hosted Saturday Night Live, and if you haven't seen the rap sketch she did, click here.
