My Brightest Diamond

Shara Warden (aka My Brightest Diamond) studied Debussy in college and opera in New York City and was the ‘head cheerleader’ for Sufjan Stevens during his 2005 tour. So it makes sense that her upcoming album, Bring me the Workhorse (Asthmatic Kitty), shows off her classically trained voice and her appreciation of the avant-garde. Mixing strings, drums and guitar, her music easily transitions from delicate to forceful as her vocals do the same.

Even though Warden’s music is unlike anything I’ve heard, her unfaltering originality reminds me of artists like Ani Difranco and Sinead O’Conner. The opening track,
Something on an End, is a perfect example of her unique style. Opening with quiet, haunting strings and hushed vocals, the song then ascends and crescendos, showing off Warden’s powerful vocal ability. Mixing serenity and rage, fragility and strength, the track is a snapshot of the overall album, which is nothing short of excellent.
