This Tuesday, The White Stripes release Icky Thump, and you can read about the new album via The Age. Jack and Meg (mostly Jack) discuss the recording of their new record and the album's title.
The title of the album comes from a northern English phrase, [Jack White] explains.Leah and I are going to see The White Stripes live in about a month and half, and I can't wait! Well, I have to wait, but I'm really looking forward to the show, even though I have to venture into Myrtle Beach (shudder). It will be worth it though. Case in point:
"Ecky thump is a statement of exclamation; 'Oh my God' or 'What the heck.' I changed (the spelling) mostly for the Americans, kind of like how Led Zeppelin took the 'a' out of lead. I love the connotation that the phrase can mean so many different things."
The White Stripes turn 10 next month. When reminded of this, Jack White grins.
"Ecky Thump, who'd a funk," he says, letting out a big laugh.
