Miles Davis Quintet, Live at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival

Next Tuesday, Monterey Jazz Festival Records will release its first five albums, all of which were recorded live at the festival. The performances chosen for release next week are Louis Armstrong 1958, Miles Davis Quintet 1963, Thelonious Monk 1964, Dizzy Gillespie 1965 and Sarah Vaughan 1971.

I'll talk more about these albums next week, but wanted to briefly mention the Miles Davis record today. This album is a must-have. With surprisingly crisp fidelity, the recording displays Miles in his prime. With the fastest version of So What I've ever heard, Miles and company had me bopping so hard I just about fell out of my chair.

The other four talented musicians playing with Miles are Herbie Hancock on piano, George Coleman on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. There's no way you can go wrong with this record.
