13 Questions: Interview with Shelly Bhushan

Simple questions often prompt interesting answers, so with this in mind I created a list of thirteen questions for a new interview series. Some of the questions I borrowed from the Proust and Pivot questionnaires, and the others are my own. The questions are meant to be fun - for the interviewee and the reader - so I cut out the ones regarding bird flu. Maybe next time.

I plan on posting a new 13 Questions interview every week or two, and, to get things started, Shelly Bhushan was kind enough to take time away from promoting her new album, Picking Daisies, to answer my questions.

And I'm glad she did - it's nice to know I'm not the only person who wants to be a MythBuster.

What is your favorite book?

It’s a toss-up between The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and The Odyssey by Homer. They were both amazing reads.

The Namesake
, because I could connect with it in that “I’m a first generation American and I happen to be half Indian” level – I basically read it in a few days and cried the entire way through.

The Odyssey
, because it was just so amazing that a blind man could tell a story so detailed and so beautiful – personally when I saw the size the book, I was like, there is NO WAY I’m going to get through this, but every night, I was excited to tear through more of it. I felt like I was actually watching this adventure unfold – I never felt that way about another story.

What is your favorite album?

Etta James – At Last. I remember when I first bought this album, probably ten years ago – I played that thing over and over and over again. That album had a huge influence on me. From phrasing to songwriting.

What is your favorite film?

Anything on TBS – kidding, I love movies, but I’m not a movie snob – I don’t think I am anyway. I love anything that makes me laugh and occasionally I’ll take a tear-jerker - anything that evokes emotion turns into a momentary favorite.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Food Smackers. Seriously, this is totally petty, but for some reason it kills me – it’s like kryptonite.

What is your favorite place?

I have yet to find it.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I’d love to be a MythBuster – like on the Discovery Channel – I think those guys have the coolest job ever! I secretly wanted to be a scientist until music overshadowed those dreams.

What is your biggest indulgence?

Food – because I’m always on a diet and whenever I eat something that I love, I feel like I’m being completely gratuitous.

What is your favorite food?

It has to be pizza – no filet mignon for me. I love pizza – any kind, just no anchovies… that would make it kinda healthy? I’m sure anchovies have Omega 3.

What is your favorite word?

F*ck – I use it too much.

What is your least favorite word?

No – because it’s the word I’m most afraid of and it’s the one that seems to hurt me the most.

Who do you least respect?

This is a tough one – there are a few, but I’ll go with anyone who commits crimes against children.

Who do you most respect?

There are so many people I respect, but I would have to say my boyfriend – he’s a pretty amazing guy. He’s taught me more about life, music and love then anyone I’ve ever known.

When and where did you answer these questions?

In the morning, at my desk.
