Danielson's Ship Has Landed

Ships, a Secretly Canadian album by Danielson, which I've been talking about ad nauseum, is finally out, and the record doesn't disappoint. Compared to Daniel Smith albums of the past, this album is more lush, layered and (for lack of a better term) evolved. This album is a huge jump forward and makes me want to write some SAT analogies:

I read somewhere that The White Stripes are to The Raconteurs as Led Zeppelin I is to Led Zeppelin IV. I'd same the same about Danielson's pre-Ships albums verses Ships - all of the music is exceptional, but this record is exceptionally exceptional.

I'm going to review the album later in the week, once I soak it all in (and there's a lot to soak in) but I just wanted to briefly mention the Sufjan Stevens connection. He's credited with oboe, flutes, whistles and glock - and I could hear some Sufjanesqe influences in the last track, Five Stars and Two Thumbs Up.

Danielson was on New York Public Radio's Spinning On Air last Sunday, and an MP3 of the one-hour show is on their web site. Daniel Smith also appeared on the show with Sufjan Stevens in 2004.
