Since I posted earlier this week about Grace Potter, I thought it appropriate that I flashback to an artist who paved the way for bad-ass, soulful women everywhere. When I was growing up, Janis Joplin was a staple in our home, and Pearl was the album my dad played the most. Released after Joplin’s death, this record was her best - with classic tracks like Me & Bobby McGee, Get It While You Can and Cry Baby, the album is perfectly perfect from beginning to end. And it even has a song of great social and political import by the name of Mercedes Benz.
I still enjoy playing Pearl on my 70’s era record player, with all the glorious pops and crackles that come along with old vinyl. The album sounds good on CD, but it’s better with the rounder, fuller sound that only vinyl can provide. If you don’t have this album, you’re missing out on one the best records ever put on wax. It’s downright groovy and empirically good.
Downloads:
Grace Potter | Nothing but the Water (Live) [MP3]
Grace Potter | Ragged Company (Live) [MP3]
Grace Potter | Bonnaroo 2006 [MP3, FLAC, OGG]
Flashbacks:
Laurie Anderson
Willie Nelson
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
