Flashback Friday: Willie Nelson

When Lyle Lovett was asked which of his records someone should buy, his answer was, “Willie Nelson, Red Headed Stranger.” This says a lot about Lyle Lovett and a lot about Red Headed Stranger, which was recorded in two days back in 1976. With circling refrains and Willie Nelson’s patented simplicity, the album tells a story about love, loss and revenge. With his sister on piano, Willie plucks his guitar and sings about cheating wives, horses, smoky taverns and western ways.

At age 73, Willie Nelson is still touring and playing songs from the album, including Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain and the instrumental Down Yonder. My wife, mom, aunt and I had the opportunity to see Willie in concert last month, and he still puts on a great show. If he comes to your town, I recommend you pull on your cowboy boots and go listen to a living legend.
